Opera was born in Italy around the year 1600 and Italian opera has continued to play a dominant role in the history of the form until the present day. Works by native Italian composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as RossiniBelliniDonizettiVerdi and Puccini, are amongst the most famous operas ever written and today are performed in opera houses across the world.

Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian operatic tenor who eventually becoming one of the most acclaimed and loved tenors of all times. He made numerous recordings of complete operas and individual arias, gaining worldwide fame for the quality of his tone, and eventually established himself as one of the finest tenors of the 20th century, achieving the honorific title "King of the High Cs".
